Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is usually done following medical treatment to remove the whole breast (mastectomy) or a part of it (lumpectomy). It aims to recreate the breasts to as normal an appearance, shape and size as possible.
Breast reconstruction is usually done in one of three ways:
Tissue transfer: tissue is taken from another part of the body and relocated to the breast while avoiding any disfigurement at its original site.
Tissue transfer + Implantation: in this case, the tissue is first transferred and then the implant placed beneath it to achieve the desired size and shape.
WHEN SHOULD ONE GET A BREAST RECONSTRUCTION DONE ?
Breast reconstruction can be done along with the mastectomy/lumpectomy or planned for a later date post chemotherapy/radiotherapy.
