Breast Augmentation Surgery: Implants or Fat Transfer, Which Option is Better

“Fat transfer and Implants both share advantages & limitations that should be explored before planning your breast augmentation surgery:

·       Are you considering breast augmentation surgery but confused about the procedures?

·       Do you have enough fat in another part of your body and wish for a natural augmentation?

·       Do you need both lifting and enlargement in size but have a question about which option should be chosen?

·       Breast implant and fat transfer are good options but customized according to one’s problem state and body type.

Fat transfer or implants, which would be the better option if you are considering breast augmentation surgery, is always a matter of discussion. For many women, the appeal of fat transfer is that its natural results are considered a safer and risk-free option. Fat transfer breast augmentation not only means you won’t have foreign substances in your body, but it also offers you contouring in another area of the body. On the other hand, implants can be a better option for those who don’t have enough fat in their body and desire the dual benefits of a lifted and enhanced breasts profile. Fat transfer breast augmentation in Bangalore, India, is a popular option among patients, and every year, many women clients undergo breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer:

Fat transfer is a method for enhancing or volumizing the breasts by extracting fat from another part of your body with liposuction, processing the fat and injecting that fat into your breasts. It is a natural option, as we are using your own fatty tissue to augment your breasts. It is a very sophisticated procedure that gives you a dual benefit of body contouring and natural breast enhancement results.

How is Fat Transfer Breast augmentation Performed?

1.    The liposuction technique is performed to harvest fat from an area of your body with excess fat.

2.    The fat cells are purified before being injected into your breasts.

3.    The purified fat is injected to meet the desired shape and fullness.

4.    Fat transfer helps achieve desired contours, as excess fat is removed from other areas where you don’t want it and augmented into your breasts at the same time.

5.    Fat transfer to the breast is a time tested technique to treat Tuberous Breast Deformities (a congenital/ birth defect seen in many women).

Advantages of Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation:

1.    Fat transfer breast augmentation is more natural, and you won’t have to bother about any foreign material in your body.

2.    It has dual benefits- as you get the desired breast enhancement and a contoured body profile by removing unwanted fat from another area of the body.

3.    This procedure doesn’t require large incisions. It is an almost scar less procedure.

4.    It is an ideal choice for tuberous breast conditions, uneven or mildly asymmetric breasts. Ideal choice for a women who desires mild to moderate volume enhancement.

Limitations of Fat transfer breast augmentation:

1.    Fat transfer breast augmentation is limited to a particular size, as the extraction of fat is decided by the availability of the same in your body. One can expect a mild to moderate enhancement, with a maximum increase in One cup size.

2.    The results of fat transfer might not last as long. The transplanted fat cells will only often survive a few years as they could be absorbed into the body or affected if you lose a lot of weight.

3.    Usually 40-50% of fat injected may get absorbed by your body in the 1st stage. 2 or 3 stages of fat transfer may be required for 100% desired results. Fat grafting can be staged at 3-6month intervals. However, many women are happy with mild volume increase and are satisfied with the 1st stage fat grafting procedure.

4.    Fat transfer is ruled out as an option if a women is very thin, or has very moderate amounts of fat in other areas of her body.

5.    Breast Fat transfer procedure takes longer than implant procedure as the fat harvesting and processing takes up more time.

6.    Since another area of the body is touched upon, you will have 2 or more areas that are recovering at the same time.

Breast Augmentation with Implants:

Breast implants are used to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. Implants help achieve a larger sized breast or regain volume with lift after massive weight loss or childbirth. Implants are also used to reconstruct the breasts after post cancer mastectomy. Breast implants are of three types, i.e., saline, silicone-gel-filled implants, and alternative composite implants. The most commonly used latest generation breast implants have a high grade silicone shell with form stable, highly cohesive silicone gel filling and superior grade surface technology. A breast implant is a medical prosthesis with FDA approvals placed either over or under your pectoral (chest) muscle.

The common Implants used at Dr Karishma Aesthetics are Motiva breast implants, Polytech Mesmo Implants, Polytech implants, Sebbin implants . There are numerous other company manufacturers, but these mentioned are the topmost brands used worldwide by most experienced Plastic surgeon’s. Dr Karishma herself, feels that these implants are of the highest quality and she has not seen any complications from these implants in her experience of more than a decade.

Advantages of breast implants:

1.    Implants are the best choice for those who want to enlarge the size, and or lift their breasts by 1/2/3 cup sizes or more.

2.    Implants give you results lasting 15-20 years. Unless you experience any symptoms of pain/ discomfort/ hardness in the breasts, these implants do not need replacement.

3.    Implants give permanent results. As long as one maintains their body profile /body weight, the results of the procedure will never change.

4.    You can achieve the exact volume enhancement as you desire without the need for multiple stages, like in fat transfer.

5.    Breast implant is the only option for those women who are very thin or with less body fat distribution.(Fat transfer is ruled out in such cases)

6.    Breast implant surgery is only 45minutes, much shorter and faster procedure as compared to fat transfer.

 Limitations of breast implants:

1.    Breast implants may need you to wear a special chest band and brassiere for 4weeks.

2.    Breast implant surgery will leave a small 4cm scar underneath the breast.

3.    You can do normal daily activities in 3-4 days, but it may take 4-6 weeks before returning to heavy duty exercise /weight lifting and sport activities. (daily walking is allowed from the 2nd day of the procedure)

4.   There is a less than 1% risk of side effects like implant rupture/ implant tears/ capsular contracture, but these can be dealt with a simple repeat procedure where the old implant can be replaced with a new one.

5.   Future pregnancies / breastfeeding after an implant procedure may change the look of the breast. If the women experiences sagging of breasts or shape change in the future, a small revision breast lift procedure can be performed later after you have completed your family.
