DR. Karishma Kagodu is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Indiranagar, Bangalore, India. She is going to describe all about k-beauty and the ideal skincare routine briefly.
K-beauty is an advanced concept of skincare routine from overseas. Some of our readers probably have never even heard of it. But anybody in the beauty and skincare industry knows that K Beauty is absolute, massive has been huge for many years, etc.
What is K-beauty?
K-beauty has become a global phenomenon. So, k-beauty basically stands for Korean beauty. So, South Korea is a Center of the world for skin care for beauty products. And as a lot of people know, for plastic surgery, we're not going to talk about the plastic-surgery part of it today. But, still, k-beauty allow that deals with skincare.
K-beauty emphasizes taking care of and perfecting your skin to the point where makeup is more secondary. And you get a natural and healthy skin glow, in addition, to cosmetics. So that's why South Koreans have long emphasized skincare and skin complexion because of the influence on glowing skin.
Use ingredients that are backed in science that have been proven to help make your skin healthier. And so, there are some pros and cons to this tiny step regimen in k-beauty. There are many steps in K-beauty skincare and so many different moisturizers, including hydration, lotion, serums, sunscreen, and an emulsion. And these all should be followed one by one as their set rules of K-beauty essence steps.
The relevance of K-beauty:
Is it vital to apply so many types of moisturizers, sunscreen, emulsions, serums, gel, or lotions that, you know, lock in the moisture of your skin?
Or, is there one type of moisturizer that is better than another?
My Philosophy is- "Look at the ingredients"! So, the reason to use perhaps a serum and a moisturizer is if the serum is delivering a specific active ingredient that you don't have in your skincare routine. Nowadays, serums and Essences are being formulated more elegantly to provide more powerful ingredients. i.e., antioxidants. Suppose the serum contains some niacinamide or vitamin C, then great because that is an extra step that's doing something for you. But suppose your essence is purely just for moisture. In that case, there is no point in using that. Instead, you must apply some active ingredients that always help in improving your skin texture.
So, whether you choose one single product with all the required skincare elements or multiple products with every different ingredient, it's all up to your personal choice.
So, use your knowledge and don't be crazy and obsessed with your skin or skincare.
So definitely, it's true that the more products you're selling, the more money you're making for the people who make the products. So, there is a commercial incentive behind this 20-step regimen. My Philosophy is when I sit down with a patient; I try to give them my honest opinion about getting healthy and youthful glowing skin.
The specific steps that Dr. Karishma Kagodu would like to recommend in K-beauty are highlighted below: -
1. In the morning, I think cleansing is optional. There's not a huge reason to cleanse if you quench the night before. Still, I would put on some antioxidants in the morning. Whether you want an essence or a serum or an ampoule, I mean, that's up to you. Still, some antioxidants, you know, I prefer vitamin C and then follow that up with sunscreen.
2. Using tinted sunscreen with the iron oxide ingredient helps block visible light. We have studies in vitro and in Vivo that show that this is the case. So look for a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide in addition to SPF 30 and above all. So broad-spectrum means it blocks both UVA and UVB.
3. I would say three steps is what I would prefer for my patients or anyone. The first is about cleansing, the second is the addition of active ingredients in your skincare regime like a retinoid, and then three a moisturizer. So really cutting it down to those three things. And then, if you want to get fancy, you can add in like a serum that's exfoliating like an alpha or beta hydroxy acid, kind of exfoliating, step that you alternate with the retinoid.
4. For moisturizers, I recommend ceramides. If you think of your skin as a brick wall, then ceramides are the glue, the mortar that holds your skin Cassell's, the bricks together. And so, you need to try to replenish that over time because they do increase with age. So looking for ceramides would be great in your moisturizer.
5. Another one is hyaluronic acid, which is a really powerful humectant. It helps your skin retain and hold onto water. So that is a wonderful ingredient to look for in your moisturizer.
6. And the last one is glycerine, which is another type of humectant as well.
What Steps should be skipped in K-beauty?
Certain steps may be helpful for specific people or individuals with particular skin concerns. But, still, I would not say everyone needs to use it. Nowadays, toners used to be popular because soaps were very basic, and they would change your skin pH. Whereas, these days, soaps are more elegantly formulated. So, they don't alter your pH as much anymore. So, the original benefit of the toner is not really as needed. However, nowadays, people are still using toners. I would say you're using an alcohol-based toner or one that is an astringent, and it can be incredibly drying and terrible for your skin. So I would not recommend using very drying alcohol-based or hazel-based toners. And I would say only use a toner if it contains an active ingredient that you need. So, for example, if you have acne or oily skin, you can use the toner to give you some gentle exfoliation to help you get rid of some of that grease.
What about Facial sheet masks?
K-beauty is also the original creator of she Sheet masks, and I think that, you know, sheet masks can be a fun way to just kind of boost your hydration for you to use a couple of times a week. And it could be a good kind of form of relaxation and self-pampering as well.
Facial sheet masks are pre-soaked Chic of either fabric or pulp that are cut to the shape of your face. And so, they come in the packets that are loaded with essence or serum. So clean your face first, and once you're ready to accept this mega dose of hydration, then you pat it on your skin. So the whole idea behind it is occlusion. So, in terminology, we use occlusion to help our medications penetrate better. And the process of occlusion will allow the medication or the cream to penetrate deeper. And that's the concept behind any facial sheet masks.
So, as a skincare expert and cosmetologist, I don't probably practice or prefer random self-care. Always consult your dermatologist/cosmetologist for the best option. They would gently recommend the specific skincare regime according to the type and texture of your skin, which is very important!
Key Note: Never go to bed with your makeup on. It is a fundamental but essential tip for people to know because you don't want all that stuff sitting on your face, blocking your pores. It's just so important to remember to go to bed with a clean face. And in this way, you can wake up the next morning refreshed.
