Some of the cosmetic surgeries are medical necessities: Dr Karishma Kagodu

Many people require cosmetic operations due to underlying medical and functional concerns. Women who have unusually big breasts, for example, may suffer from spondylitis, postural issues, and excruciating back and neck pain. Their inability to engage in regular activities or exercise may result from this ailment, which may also cause social stigma.

Shahid Akhter, editor, of ETHealthworld, spoke to Dr. Karishma Kagodu Managing Director, Dr. Karishma Aesthetics, Bengaluru, to figure out the challenges that continue to burden aesthetic plastic surgery.

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: Advancements

I've witnessed the remarkable evolution of plastic and cosmetic surgery over the last few decades. One of the most well-known procedures in this field is liposuction, which has undergone significant advancements over the past 40 to 50 years. Originally, liposuction techniques were rudimentary, involving manual methods that often resulted in prolonged recovery times and increased bleeding for patients. However, in recent years, we've seen remarkable progress, transitioning from first-generation manual liposuction to more refined approaches such as power liposuction, laser, and ultrasound techniques. These advancements have led to improved outcomes, shorter recovery times, and enhanced patient comfort. According to statistics from the International Society, the top five most commonly performed aesthetic procedures worldwide include liposuction and body contouring, tummy tucks, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and buttock surgeries. Remarkably, India ranks among the top 10 countries experiencing a surge in plastic cosmetic surgeries, reflecting the growing demand and acceptance of these procedures in our country.

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: Challenges

A significant challenge in aesthetic surgery lies in navigating the limitations of insurance coverage. While there is a strong global and domestic demand for these procedures, patients often face the additional financial burden of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the surgeries themselves. Furthermore, the rationale behind seeking aesthetic surgery can extend beyond purely cosmetic concerns. Many individuals have underlying medical and functional issues that necessitate these procedures. For instance, women with abnormally enlarged breasts may experience debilitating back and neck pain, postural problems, and even spondylitis. This condition can lead to social stigma and hinder their ability to participate in daily activities or exercise. A major hurdle for the field is convincing governing bodies and insurance providers to recognize the functional necessity of certain aesthetic procedures. Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is a prime example. Despite the profound impact it has on a woman's physical and emotional well-being, it is often classified as cosmetic rather than medically necessary. The benefits of aesthetic surgery extend beyond physical appearance. These procedures can significantly improve a patient's self-esteem and confidence, particularly for those struggling with depression or body image issues. Additionally, plastic surgery plays a vital role in correcting facial and bodily deformities, allowing individuals to reclaim a sense of normalcy and improve their quality of life. Despite these undeniable medical and psychological advantages, many plastic surgery procedures remain uncovered by insurance. This financial burden falls solely on the patient, highlighting a disconnect between the perception of cosmetic surgery as purely aesthetic and its demonstrably positive impact on health and well-being.

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: Market trends

A recent surge in demand for aesthetic plastic surgery procedures has been observed globally over the past decade. According to a comprehensive study by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS), the number of plastic surgeries performed worldwide has increased by a staggering 41.3% by 2022 compared to the preceding four to five years. This trend is particularly pronounced in the domain of non-surgical procedures, which have witnessed a remarkable 50% rise. While surgical procedures have also shown significant growth of 20-25%, with liposuction being the most prevalent, the market is demonstrably shifting towards less invasive techniques. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors, including advancements in medical technology that offer more effective and safer options, and evolving societal norms that place a greater emphasis on physical appearance. Notably, the Indian market reflects this global trend, with increasing affordability and economic prosperity leading to a significant rise in the number of plastic surgery procedures performed over the past five to eight years.

Dr Karishma Aesthetics: Growth and journey so far

Dr. Karishma Aesthetics, a respected daycare cosmetic centre, celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, having been established in 2018. My journey began with a fervent passion for surgery, particularly in the field of plastic surgery, which was a male-dominated specialty in the early 2000s. Fulfilling this aspiration required a demanding thirteen-year educational journey, consisting of six years of medical school followed by three years each of general surgery and a subspecialty in plastic surgery.Driven by a deep interest in aesthetic surgery, I further honed my skills through international fellowships in Italy, the United Kingdom, Dubai, and Istanbul. These fellowships focused on various aspects of cosmetic surgery, including rhinoplasty, body contouring, and breast reconstructive surgery. Upon returning to Bangalore, I played a pivotal role in establishing the plastic surgery department at my alma mater, Kolar Medical College. Subsequently, I held leadership positions in corporate hospitals like Astha CMI Hospital . However, I was motivated by the limited number of female plastic surgeons and a desire to take on challenges. This led me to establish Dr. Karishma Aesthetics. As the first female plastic surgeon to open a private daycare centre in Karnataka, our clinic provides a comprehensive approach, integrating dental cosmetics, plastic surgery, dermatology, and cosmetology under one roof. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our five-star ambiance and cutting-edge facilities, including an in-house operating theatre. We are proud to have introduced innovative technologies like the Vaser liposuction device, further elevating the standards of cosmetic medicine in Bangalore and the surrounding region.

Dr Karishma Aesthetics: Future Plans

I am committed to fostering the future of plastic surgery by providing training and mentorship opportunities to aspiring surgeons. I envision opening my clinic to these talented individuals, creating a platform for them to learn and develop their skills in an academic setting. As advancements in technology and techniques continue, I will remain at the forefront of innovation within the field. In the coming years, I hope to expand the reach and influence of Dr. Karishma Aesthetics, solidifying its reputation as a leader in the field of cosmetic surgery.
