"A continuous surge in demand for plastic cosmetic surgery after COVID is surprising!"

·       Are you experiencing significant weight gain after the pandemic?

·       Do you know that stress and lifestyle changes affect your skin and body?

·       Do you know that more patients are coming in for plastic surgery than ever before after COVID?

·       Do you know that the most demanding procedures after the pandemic are Tummy tuck, liposuction, COVID stress-related hairfall treatment and covid mask- acne ?

It is surprising that after COVID 19, the plastic cosmetic surgery industry recorded a boom, especially for the body contouring procedures and facial cosmetic treatments. Everyone has struggled differently and faced twists and turns during the pandemic. The past two years have been very stressful for everybody, and the plastic surgery industry was also not untouched.

During the pandemic, people did start postponing the physical appointments and surgeries for the next 5-6 months. But, now, they are re-scheduling the procedures, resulting in a boom in plastic surgery, noted Dr. Karishma Kagodu, MS, M CH., head of Dr. Karishma Aesthetics, Bangalore.

Here, in the write-up, Dr. Karishma Kagodu is giving light on the top 4 plastic surgery trends of 2022:

1.    There is an upsurge in body contouring surgeries after COVID.

Initially, it looked like cosmetic surgeries would decline due to the fear of infection and COVID strict guidelines. However, still, people are coming in for plastic surgeries. Undoubtedly, the changed lifestyle and mental stress have taken a toll on one's eating habits and working lifestyle. People are now more friendly to the digital world than physical meet-ups or office visits. However, many people raise the concern of being overweight due to a sedentary lifestyle. The frozen and canned food habit has been a key reason behind a weak metabolism and unwanted fat deposition. Therefore, after the pandemic, tummy tuck surgeries, liposuction, tummy tuck, arm liposuction, arm lift, and buttock lifts are more in demand than ever before.

2.    There is an increase in cases related to Post-Covid Hairfall &its treatment

Men and women have been experiencing a sudden hairfall and hair thinning a few months after getting affected by the covid infection. When the human body experiences any from of trauma/ surgery / infection- the body goes in a state of shock. During the infection the body is fighting the disease and focusing on vital organs, rather than the hair . hence, after few months of any infection or a low immunity phase(not just covid) , the hair follicles react and start shedding. One must not panic, and remember firstly this condition is reversible. Second, prompt treatment with hair supplements , scalp serums and prp(platelet-rich plasma) can help. Usually it take 4-6months after start of hairfall, for your hair cycle to regularize. So meet your dermatologist or trichologist and get immediate medical treatment.

3.    More men are joining in for plastic cosmetic procedures.

As I discussed earlier, the digital world encouraged the reel and going live culture, resulting in men also starting to visit plastic cosmetic surgery clinics. As a plastic surgeon, I am amazed to see that there is heightened awareness of plastic surgeries and cosmetic treatments after the pandemic. According to a report published by the journal of the Medical Association, gynecomastia surgery(reduction of breast tissue in men) has become increasingly popular than ever before. Even men have started noticing their skin issues and availing skin rejuvenation treatments. In the age of zoom meetings/ webinars, everyone has started noticing their features and figured that they have time to recover at home after doing procedures. There is also an upsurge in men's facial cosmetic treatments and lasers, which is because of increasing the craze for being presentable in front of the camera.

4.    COVID related Mask-acne/ Stress Acne breakouts

Many men and women are experiencing mask related acne or just simple stress acne post covid. Well its better to treat them sooner or post acne scars at a later date are difficult to treat. A combination of stress, lifestyle changes, eating junk food sitting at home have been the main reasons. One must visit your dermatologist / cosmetologist to get the acne treated with combination of medicines, topical creams. If the acne is very severe, one may need Chemical peels or other skin acne treatments. Early treatment can cure the problem faster and not leave behind deep scars.

5.    Rhinoplasty surgery/ nose job surgery and Face Aesthetic procedures (BOTOX/ FILLERS)

During this pandemic , most persons are now working from home. Even office meetings are on the computer in form of webinars or zoom calls. Many people wanting nose surgery have previously been hesitant to do it as they neededtime to recover. Now they have realized that they are able to recover at home, and still be able to perform their office work. Hence, the numbers of rhinoplasty surgeries have been on a steady rise. Facial non surgical treatments like botox/ face dermal fillers/ threadlift /facelift/ necklift surgery aare also in demand. You can recover from the swelling at home and still do your work. Work from home environment has given people more time to think about themselves and figure solutions.
